Seasonings go ethnic! New products from Mintel

Innovations in private label are taking on board ethnic tastes, such as Latin American and North African flavours, highlighted Manon Dupres from Mintel at Wabel’s recent Grocery Summit during her conference on the latest trends. And clearly illustrating this trend, as well as others, is the following selection of new private label seasonings put together by Mintel for Wabel.

 

In Germany Aldi Süd launched in November a couscous seasoning mix, the Schätze des Orients Couscous Gewürzmischung - for traditional North African couscous dishes. The product, that also targets convenience, retails at 1.49 and is designed to be used with lamb, chickpeas, onions and garlic, and is sold in a 40g pack.

Ingredients include: Cumin Seed, Chili Pepper, Coriander, Onion, Garlic, Anise Star, Oregano, Mustard Seeds (Seed), Thyme.

In a second November launch, Aldi Süd in Germany continues the diversification of its spice offer with flavours from more specific regions. Their Schätze des Orients Arabisches Orangengewürz (Arabian Orange Seasoning Mix) is a fine, mild and fruity mix. The product claims to be ideal for rice, carrots, pumpkin, onions, fish and light poultry meat, and retails in a 40g pack for 1.49.

Ingredients include: Coriander, Black Pepper, Fennel, Cumin Seed, Ginger, Tomato Flakes (Flakes), Garlic, Paprika, Orange Oil.

Clearly targeting a combination of convenience and Christmas, in October UK retailer Marks & Spencer launched the M&S House Blend Christmas Spices, available for Christmas 2014. A blend of sugar and ground spices with flavourings, the product is to be mixed with honey and then used as a glaze for the traditional British meat preparation gammon. It retails in a 55g recyclable pack for 3.03.

Ingredients include: Caster Sugar, Spices (Ground) (Cinnamon, Ginger, Juniper Berry, Nutmeg, Black Pepper), Flavouring Substances, clementine oil.

Extending its range of Asian private label products, in the UK Lidl introduced in October the Vitasia China Lemongrass Wok Spices mix that consists of ground lemongrass. The product retails in a recyclable 35g pack for 0.59.

Bringing a totally new and innovative salt format to the consumer, Lancaster Plus in Spain recently rolled out a liquid salt with a cucumber flavour. Costing 1.79, Fossil River Sal Líquida Pepino, repackaged in a newly designed 100ml bottle, claims to be low in sodium, contains natural cucumber flavour, and is suitable for all types of dishes.

Joining the growing number of premium salts, Country Life in the Czech Republic now offers Sul Himalájská Ruzová Jemná (Himalayan Fine Pink Salt) to its customers. The product retails in a 500g pack for 0.76.
